Movies and TV Show Screenings

Student organizations wishing to host a screening of a particular movie, television show, or other piece of media must obtain the rights to that piece of media well in advance of their event. It is illegal to stream pieces of media during events without the rights to do so.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I purchase the rights/license in order to screen a movie on campus?

You may contact the movie vendor (smaller, independent films) directly or use one these vendors: Swank Motion Pictures, Inc. or Criterion Pictures.

How long does it take to secure the rights/license for a movie?

Student organizations will need about 2-3 weeks before the date of your screening to secure the public performance license and to be sent the actual video or DVD from an authorized licensing agent.

Can my student organization host a screening of a movie if I have a copy of the movie?

No. Unless your student organization has secured the rights and license to the specific movie being screened. This includes DVDs and movies streaming on Netflix, Hulu, etc.
